Ionia was the center of pre-Socratic philosophy and the birthplace of the Hellenistic Greek renaissance. The Temple of Apollo at Didyma began as an oracular shrine in the 8th century B.C. The Hellenistic temple built on this site was one of the largest in the ancient world. It was constructed over a period of 500 years and never fully completed.
