Called Telmessos in ancient times, Fethiye lies on the Mediterranean Sea at the feet of the forested hillsides of Mount Mendos. Once a rich and cultured town, the area is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, as well as elaborately carved Lycian cliff tombs, the most remarkable being the 4th century BC tomb of Amnytas, the town fortress, and Roman theater.
