The plains of central Greece are long and flat, until the sudden appearance of the bizarre, black rock formations at Meteora. Many of these twisted rocks climb as high as 1000 ft (300m), thus the literal meaning of the word Meteora, is “flying in midair”. The closer approach reveals some of the 24 large monasteries, which were built on the tops of these gigantic rock towers.
