Divided into two quarters, the town’s western side is mainly Muslim and the eastern part Christian, with magnificent churches carved of intricate stone masonry. Also Turkey’s center for silversmiths, many workshops and small stores sell their wares throughout the town. Not far beyond is the still active Syriac-Jacobite monastery, dating from the 5th century.
