The ancient city and seaport of  Myra outshone Xanthos by early Byzantine times to become the capital of Lycia. Mostly abandoned by 10 AD due to plague, raids, flooding, and earthquakes, the site is renowned for its magnificent amphitheater and a profusion of ornate tombs carved into the cliffs.
