At
2150 m. above the arid Eastern plain lies the massive 1st century B.C. funeral
sanctuary of Antiochos I of the Commagene, flanked by colossal 9-10 m. statues
paying homage to the Greek and Persian gods. Nearby are ancient Eskikale, the
Karakus tumulus (royal family’s burial place), the Roman Cendere bridge, and
the Yenikale castle built by the Mamluks.
