Serpentine streets climb to a majestic acropolis that offers a remarkable view of Pergamon’s later cities, nestled in the valleys below. The remains of the ancient upper city include one of the steepest theaters in antiquity, the second-largest library of the ancient world, the Athena Temple, and site of the Zeus Altar. The lower city houses the ancient healing center, dedicated to Asclepius.
