Sardis, the capital of the Lydian Empire and first city to coin, was the wealthiest and most powerful kingdom in Asia Minor. Remains of a gold refinery to which the city owed its wealth are still visible. The magnificent Artemis Temple, the Roman Gymnasium and the 2nd-century synagogue, the largest synagogue in the ancient world, are it’s notable structures.
